Chakli..Indian spiral Savoury

Chakli or Chakralu or Murrukku..its the same item with different names.. The spiral savoury which is mostly made during Diwali..I remember my childhood days, I used to love making these spirals and help my mom.

This is the first time I tried to make it myself. Since my husband is a great snack lover, I made it for him yesterday. My mom used to make this using some big procedure, soaking rice and chana dal and then drying them in shade and then grinding them to powder, but I tried a different easier method and am happy with the outcome.

So here goes the recipe .....
  • 1 cup Urad dal
  • 3 cups Rice flour
  • 1 tsp Jeera or Ajwain (I used Ajwain)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds / nuvvulu
  • 1 tsp Chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

Method :

1. Wash Urad dal atleast 2 times

2. Pour enough water in the cooker and boil Urad dal till its complete paste..

3. After the dal cools down, mash the urad dal and mix it with Rice flour

4. Add Jeera , sesame seeds, chilli powder and salt and mix it in soft dough

5. Add some water if required , make sure the dough is not very soft and sticky,.. it should be like chapati dough

6.Keep the dough covered aside for half an hour

7. Now make spirals with the Chakli Maker

8. Heat oil on medium high

9. Fry the chaklis till they are golden brown on both the sides.

Tips: Do not add any oil or butter while mixing the dough, as it my cause the spirals to break in oil
